Where is it from?
Pineapple is pronounced as “wong lai” in Taiwanese, and it means to raise the fertility of a family. Therefore, pineapple is usually used in making cakes for the weddings or worship. In early Taiwan, pineapple cake was too big and expensive to afford for the common citizens. The pineapple cake consumers’ purchase nowadays has been lowered in price by a pastry chef in Taichung who reformed it into a small-sized cake.

The stuffing of pineapple cake is made from pineapple stewed with egg, honey, and wax gourd. The outer of pineapple cake is the dough made by the mixture of butter, shortening, icing sugar, plain flour and egg. After finishing the above-mentioned steps, a pastry chef will stuff in the dough and bake it as the small-squared pineapple cake.

Pineapple cake is one of famous local cuisines in Taichung City; therefore, many famous stores are located in this city. However, after pineapple cake is selected as the best souvenir of Taipei City in 2006, it has shot to fame and became the most popular souvenir for both visitors and locals.
